I came across an interesting statistic about Connecticut's voters this week:
- Registered Democrats 792,934
- Registered Republicans 433,057
- Registered Independents 914,893
That totals to 2,140,884, and the percentage split is
- Registered Democrats 37.0%
- Registered Republicans 20.2%
- Registered Independents 42.7%
It is interesting to contemplate this in connection to at least two of the current races:
- Republican candidate Linda McMahon is spending $115,000 per day of her own WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) fortune to blanket Connecticut's airwaves with ads which disparage her opponent, long-time Attorney General Richard Blumenthal. She has vowed to spend up to $50 million to win the seat.
- Democrat Dan Malloy of Stamford is running for Governor; his opponent is Tom Foley, another self-financed candidate, also from Greenwich. Malloy is relying on $6 million in public financing.
Connecticut has not elected a Democrat as governor since 1986. Foley's comment? “I think people in Connecticut are smart, and they want some adult supervision in Hartford,” he said.
All four candidates are from the two towns farthest from the state capitol in Hartford, and the two towns with the highest Grand Lists in the state.
How will the voters respond to the ads they see and the debates they hear?
